São Tomé citizenship: approval, citizenship and passport explained

A citizenship application is easier to plan when you distinguish an approval decision from the grant of citizenship and the issue of a passport. Each answers a different question. Organise those questions before committing funds, arranging travel or making family plans.
What happens before official review?
Start with your purpose and identify who would apply. Which civil records are available, and what needs updating? Put preparation, eligibility checks and document coordination in your plan separately from official review. Ask when a complete file is ready for formal submission, who submits it and how missing information will be handled.
Does approval mean citizenship and a passport have been issued?
An approval does not confirm that every remaining formality is complete or that a passport has already been issued. The official programme website indicates around two months for approval and a further three to four months for the passport, approximately five to six months overall. These are planning indications; individual requirements and official processing can affect timing.
What needs confirmation after an approval decision?
Request a written explanation of the remaining steps: which payments or documents become due, what evidence records the grant of citizenship, and who confirms completion. Keep the milestones separate. Do not assume that every family member has reached the same stage simply because one person has received a decision.
How should passport issuance and delivery be planned?
Distinguish confirmation that a passport has been issued from physically receiving it. Ask how status is communicated, how personal details are checked, and how corrections or delivery questions are handled. Allow for document requests and the authorities’ processing before booking travel that depends on the new passport.
